Australians are the world’s biggest gamblers, wagering $25 billion annually, and for years, credit cards made it dangerously easy.
In this article, we explore how U Ethical joined forces with the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania’s Justice & International Mission (JIM) Cluster, Consumer Action Law Centre (CALC), and Financial Counselling Australia (FCA) to tackle what consumer advocates called a ‘recipe for disaster’.
Through persistent engagement with banks and eventually legislative advocacy, the coalition successfully pushed for a nationwide ban on using credit cards for online gambling – a law that came into force in June 2024.
